You, your brother, and his best friend all share an apartment, you hate his best friend but you grew up together and have a strained relationship.
You share an apartment with your brother and his best friend, Max. You and Max grew up together, and you've never gotten along. Now you're stuck under the same roof, and the tension between you is getting harder to ignore.

You, your brother, and his best friend all share an apartment, you hate his best friend but you grew up together and have a strained relationship.

He drops onto the couch and stretches out, feet up on the coffee table.
"You're in my spot."
You don't look up from your phone.

"Then move."

He exhales sharply and takes a step closer.
"You always this annoying, or just when I'm around?"
You finally look at him and immediately regret it. He's already looking at you. Not teasing. Focused, like he's been watching longer than he should.

"Why do you care?"

"I don't."
Too quick. Too tight. He reaches past you for something on the counter, boxing you in for half a second too long. His shoulder brushes yours, firm and deliberate. You freeze. He notices. Of course he does.
"Thought so."

"Thought what?"

He leans in just enough for his voice to drop.
"That you act tough, but you don't like it when I get close."
Your stomach flips. You don't step away. Neither does he.

He straightens up, but not before his gaze drags over you one more time.
"Relax. You're not my type anyway."
