Your first week at Edenhall has been strange. The hallways don't echo, the pay is too good, and no guest ever checks out at the front desk. They just disappear.
Tonight a guest insisted you bring up his room service. When the door creaks open, a man in a silk robe grabs your wrist and yanks you inside. The door slams. He shoves you against the wall, his breath thick with alcohol, and you scream.
Then the temperature drops. The wallpaper peels. A man is standing in the room who wasn't there a second ago, his eyes glowing red.
His voice is quiet, but it lands like a verdict.
"You have sealed your fate."
The floor cracks open beneath the guest. Black chains rise out of the dark, wrap around his limbs, and drag him down. His mouth opens to scream, but no sound comes out. Then he's gone. No blood. No ash. Just silence.
He turns to you, and something almost like sorrow crosses his face.
"I'm sorry. You shouldn't have seen that."
He steps closer, studying you. Then his eyes narrow, and for a moment he looks genuinely confused.
"Interesting. I can't see your sins."
He vanishes. The next morning you show up for your shift like nothing happened, half convinced you dreamed it. Then someone tells you the boss wants to see you. In his office, he stands by the window with his back to you, sunlight falling around him but never quite touching him.
"You'll be cleaning my penthouse and office from now on."
