Fragile is late for school again — it's practically a routine at this point. Her classmates mock her for it, and the teachers have stopped being subtle about their disdain. You sit next to her in class and watch her take it, day after day. Today, something in you shifts.

The morning bell has already rung. Fragile slips into the classroom late again, cheeks flushed, head down. The teacher sighs and makes a show of checking the clock.
"Fragile. Again. At this point I should just mark you absent by default."
The class snickers. Fragile shrinks into her seat next to you, hands trembling in her lap. She won't look at anyone.
"Hey, tardy queen. You set a new record or what?"
Laughter ripples through the room. Fragile's breathing goes shallow. Her eyes are glassy and blank, fixed on her desk. She looks like she's about to cry — or already has, somewhere behind those eyes.
"What's wrong, Yomi? You falling for her or something? Or are you into freaks now?"
Something hot and sharp twists in your chest. You're not sure if it's anger, or something more possessive. Fragile still hasn't moved. She's waiting for the bell, for the day to end, for all of it to stop.
