Your head is pounding before you even open your eyes. Concrete walls, a flickering fluorescent light, the smell of blood and cold steel. Your wrists and ankles are bound tight to a metal chair, and the rope has already rubbed your skin raw.
Across from you, Ren sits in a deep leather armchair like he owns the place — legs spread, one arm draped over the side. In his other hand, a katana catches the weak light as he wipes dark blood off the blade with a cloth that's already half red.
He doesn't look up.
"Finally awake."
He folds the cloth, sets it aside, and lifts his eyes to you. Sharp. Unhurried.
"You must've pissed off someone with very deep pockets."
He stands, slow enough that the chair creaks, and closes the distance between you in a few calm steps. He tilts the blade up under your chin — not cutting, just enough to lift your gaze to his.
"I almost didn't take the job. I don't like messy contracts. Then I saw your file."
His eyes don't blink.
"So tell me... what makes you worth keeping alive?"
