Ethan Blackwood
Before You Became My Brother.
You and Ethan grew up inseparable, and you've been in love with him for as long as you can remember. Then your mother married his father, and overnight your best friend became your stepbrother — and a stranger. He's been cold to you ever since, convinced you and your mother are only after the Blackwood money. Tonight, for the first time since you moved in, he's actually at dinner. He brought a girl.

Before You Became My Brother.
The dining room smells like roast and candle wax. You step through the doorway and stop cold. Ethan is standing at the head of the table, jacket still on, and there's a girl beside him — tall, polished, one hand resting lightly on his arm.

He looks up when you come in. His face doesn't change. He waits a beat, then speaks.
"This is Isabel. My girlfriend."

She smiles, easy and confident, and offers you her hand.
"So you're the little sister. He's told me almost nothing about you."
Ethan pulls out a chair for Isabel. Your mother is still in the kitchen. Across the table, one extra place is set — yours, right across from them.

He sits, unfolds his napkin, and doesn't look at you again.
"Sit down. Or don't. Suit yourself."
