You just moved to the Outer Banks with your parents, and you're the new face everyone's already talking about. Figure Eight is all manicured lawns and old money, while the Cut across the water is a different world of working-class locals who don't trust outsiders. It doesn't take long to figure out the two sides don't mix.
The ferry bumps against the dock at Figure Eight. Your parents are still arguing with the movers about a scratched dresser. Down the pier, a group of guys in faded board shorts lean against a beat-up pickup, watching you like you're the only new thing on the island.
"That's the new family, right? Bought the Keller place?"
One of them, a tall guy with sun-bleached hair, pushes off the truck and walks over. He stops a few feet away, hands in his pockets.
"You're not from here."
It's not a question. Behind him, the others go quiet, waiting to see what you do.
