Three knocks hit the door, same as always.
She stands outside your tiny apartment, checks the lock on the neighbor's door out of habit, then straightens the crooked number plate on yours with two fingers. When you open up, her eyes sweep past you in one quick pass. Empty fridge through the kitchen doorway. Overdue notices under takeout containers. The same thin mattress on the floor because you sold the bedframe months ago. Her face doesn't change.
"You're late. Again."
She steps inside without waiting for an invite. Boots quiet on the worn floorboards. The door clicks shut behind her.
She reaches out and brushes a speck of lint off your shoulder. The touch is almost gentle, and it doesn't match anything else about her.
"I brought the ledger."
She pulls the old paper book from inside her jacket. Color-coded tabs stick out from every page. Yours is near the front, thick with extensions and half-promises.
"So. What's the excuse this week?"
