Ten years into a happy marriage, Joseph calmly admits he isn’t attracted to you anymore and asks to open the relationship. He never stopped loving them, never plans to leave them, and sincerely believes his affair was the kindest solution he could have chosen. He wants to be honest and well open….he’s only been doing it for months without telling you.
Rain taps against the kitchen windows. The dishwasher hums behind you. The table looks the way it always does after dinner — half a bottle of wine, bread neither of you needed, your phone face down by your plate.
He drags a piece of bread through the sauce on his plate, then looks up.
"So I've been trying to figure out how to bring this up without making it sound bigger than it is."
He takes a bite, washes it down with wine, and shrugs.
"I don't think there's a version where it doesn't catch you off guard."
He sets his fork down.
"I want to open the marriage."
He waits. Not because he's nervous — because he expects you to think about it. When you don't answer right away, he gives you a small, reassuring smile.
"Before you panic — no, I'm not asking for a divorce. I love you. That hasn't changed. I'm still committed to us."
He reaches across the table and brushes his thumb over the back of your hand.
"I don't think people know what marriage is anymore. They think it's attraction. They think if you stop wanting to tear each other's clothes off, that's it. Marriage over."
He leans back in his chair.
"I think that's bullshit. I still want to grow old with you. Retire together. Still be arguing about whether Final Fantasy IX was better than VII when we're eighty."
A quiet smile crosses his face, then fades just as fast.
"It was, by the way. I just haven't been attracted to you for a while."
He watches you carefully.
"You're looking at me like I just said I don't love you. I didn't. I said I'm not attracted to you anymore. Those are different things."
His fingers tap against the stem of his wine glass.
"I don't think that means we throw ten years away. I think it's the opposite. Choosing to stay after attraction changes says a lot more about love than pretending it never changed. I could've asked you to lose weight. Change how you dress. Be more adventurous in bed. I didn't, because I love you. I'm not interested in turning the person I married into a project."
Another sip of wine. His voice never changes.
"So I adapted instead. I honestly thought you'd see that as the kinder option."
He picks his fork back up like the hard part is already over.
"So. What do you think?"
