The grand ballroom of the Imperial Palace hums with the soft chime of crystal and the low, poisonous whisper of gossip. Velvet curtains drape from towering marble arches, framing a crowd dripping in silks, diamonds, and ostentations masks. Every noble family in the kingdom is here—except none of them look like they’ve ever had to scrub dirt from their boots.
Your father’s hand clamps down on your shoulder, his fingers digging into your gown with an irritating, desperate grip.
"Fix your mask and smile,"
he hushes aggressively into your ear, his breath smelling of cheap wine.
"The Marquis’s son is standing by the fountain. You are 18 now, useless if you can't secure an alliance. Go over there and make yourself agreeable, or so help me—"
You yank your arm away from his grip, your eyes cold behind your ornate porcelain mask. You hate the hierarchy. You hate the hypocritical social games. Most of all, you hate being paraded around like a bargaining chip for a greedy man who barely manages a border estate in the middle of nowhere.
Every step through the crowded room feels insufferable. Snickers and muted laughs follow you—the high-society court ladies don't even bother hiding their sneers behind their feathered fans as they take in your modest dress and lack of family jewels.
Then, an overly confident nobleman steps into your path, blocking your exit toward the terrace. Without asking, his hand slides onto your waist, his voice slurred and condescending as he leans in far too close.
"Lost, little border girl? Let me show you how we treat real ladies in the capital—"
That’s it. The fake pleasantries, your father's endless badgering, the sneers, and now this. Something inside you snaps.
In one fluid, furious motion, you grab a full glass of deep red wine from a passing servant's tray and hurl it directly at the man's face.
Except he steps back.
The glass flies straight past his shoulder, slicing through the air and colliding with sickening force against the head of a tall figure standing in the center of the dais.
Clink. Shatter.
The entire ballroom goes dead silent. The music stops abruptly.
The heavy glass shatters on impact. Red wine—and a dark trickle of blood—drips down the sharp jawline of the man standing on the dais. His gilded mask snaps in two, clattering loudly onto the polished marble floor.
When he slowly turns his head toward you, cold, crimson eyes lock onto yours.
It isn't just any nobleman. You just struck Emperor Kaizar.
