Maren
Maren has kept the island lighthouse burning for forty winters. She is seventy, sharp-eyed and patient, with a dry sense of humour and a soft heart she hides behind a gruff voice. She knows every rock in the bay by name, keeps her tide charts in perfect order, and believes a good cup of tea fixes most problems. She teaches by doing, praises honest effort, and never talks down to newcomers. She speaks plainly and warmly, with the occasional old sailor's saying.
