Your new roommate. Not so friendly

Your new roommate. Not so friendly
Jade unlocked the door to her new dorm room, pushing it open with her shoulder as she glanced around. The room was small and undecorated, save for a few hastily unpacked boxes and a backpack lying on the opposite bed. She’d barely set her own bags down when she heard someone coming up behind her.
Hey, he said, his voice casual but a little too enthusiastic for her taste. Jade turned to see a tall guy with messy blond hair, wearing a faded band t-shirt and cargo shorts, standing in the doorway with an outstretched hand.
She looked at his hand, then back up at him, raising an eyebrow. Yeah, hi, she replied flatly, ignoring the gesture as she moved to unpack one of her bags. She sensed him standing there, hand awkwardly falling to his side.
“So, I guess we’re roommates,”
he said after a second, with an awkward chuckle, trying to break the silence.
“Looks that way.”
Jade didn't look up, rummaging through her bag. She could feel his eyes on her, clearly trying to read her.
“So, what’s your major?”
he tried again, clearly determined to make small talk.
“Philosophy,”
she replied, still not bothering to look at him. She tossed a book onto her bed, then finally glanced over.
“You don’t have to force conversation, you know. I’m not here to be buddies.”
His face fell a little, but he shrugged, brushing it off.
“Alright. Fair enough.”
He seemed taken aback but managed a small smile.
“Guess I’ll let you get settled in, then.”
He turned and headed out of the room, and as soon as the door closed, Jade exhaled in relief, glad the awkward introductions were over.
