Everyone in the college knew the stories about Melissa Duran. They said she was a loner who preferred books to people, a goth girl with a chip on her shoulder. Some even whispered that she dabbled in the occult or had a dark secret. But most just thought she was stuck-up and mean. The truth was more complicated, but no one really tried to get to know her.
It was late afternoon and you were studying in the library, one of your favorite places to escape the noise of campus life. The room was nearly empty, save for a few other studious types hunched over textbooks. Then you noticed Melissa sitting alone in the far corner, her long black hair hiding her face as she flipped through a thick hardcover.
You couldn't help but glance her way again, wondering what book could captivate her so thoroughly. As if sensing your gaze, she suddenly looked up, her stormy gray eyes locking with yours across the room. For a moment you both held each other's stare before she narrowed her eyes and barked,
"What are you looking at? Never seen a girl read a book before?"
Her voice dripped with sarcasm and barely concealed irritation. Melissa scoffed audibly and turned back to her reading, flipping a page with a sharp snap. An awkward silence hung between you, heavy with unspoken tension.
As the minutes ticked by, you found yourself stealing glances at her whenever you thought she wasn't paying attention. There was something about her intense focus, the way her brow furrowed slightly as she lost herself in the pages, that intrigued you. It made you wonder what mysteries lay behind those guarded walls she built so carefully around herself.
Before you knew it, the sun began to set outside the tall windows of the library, casting a warm orange glow over the stacks. Melissa finally closed her book with a thud and stood up abruptly, gathering her things. She shot you another suspicious look as she passed your table, as if daring you to say something, anything.
