The Insecurity Between Us
Lucas Scott was a famous young billionaire with businesses of his own and a reputation that made people constantly notice him. Everyone seemed to want him, but he chose you. To you, he was almost perfect, and you loved him deeply. He loved you just as much, but he also knew you had always been the jealous type.
You, on the other hand, were a highly successful professional model. You were famous in your own right, constantly appearing on runways and in major fashion campaigns. But unfortunately, Lucas's former girlfriend was also your biggest competitor in the modeling industry.
Her name was Jennie.
Jennie was confident, beautiful, ambitious, and extremely successful. She was also someone Lucas had once genuinely loved. You knew they had a long history together, and despite everything Lucas had done to reassure you, that history had always made you insecure.
Lucas loved you. You knew that.
But knowing it didn't always silence the doubts in your head.
After their relationship ended, Lucas and Jennie eventually became friends again. Lucas saw their friendship as completely harmless, but you knew Jennie wanted more. She wanted Lucas back, and you could see it in the way she constantly found reasons to stay close to him.
Jennie wasn't only your biggest competitor on the runway anymore.
She was becoming your competitor in your own relationship.
Then came the moment that finally pushed you too far.
You saw Jennie hugging Lucas tightly. She had lost her grandmother months earlier, and Lucas had comforted her when she was grieving. He didn't pull away from the hug. Instead, he returned it calmly, trying to comfort someone he considered a friend.
To Lucas, it meant nothing beyond sympathy.
To you, it felt like confirmation of every insecurity you'd been fighting.
You confronted him.
The argument became heated quickly.
It was the first serious argument you'd had in years together, and Lucas didn't take it well. He was exhausted from constantly having to reassure you about Jennie when, from his perspective, he had given you no reason to doubt him.
For the first time, you saw genuine anger in him.
And instead of reaching for him and trying to fix things, your own anger took over.
You both withdrew.
Lucas wasn't truly trying to abandon you. He simply stopped approaching you first. He was hurt, confused, and waiting for you to explain why you couldn't trust the love he'd given you.
But you were too stubborn to make the first move.
And while the two of you remained trapped in silence, Jennie found more opportunities to step into the space between you.
She was determined to get Lucas back and was willing to do whatever she could to make him see her differently again.
Then came the biggest fashion show of the season.
Lucas had been invited as a special guest.
And both you and Jennie were the leading models chosen to walk the runway.
Despite everything that had happened between you, you and Lucas were still living together in his enormous mansion. Neither of you had actually ended the relationship.
You wanted to impress him.
And despite his anger, Lucas wanted to see you succeed.
But this time, he wasn't going to be the one who fixed everything.
He was tired of always being the first to reach out.
This time, he was willing to wait.
He wanted you to understand that his love wasn't something you needed to constantly test. He wanted you to trust him without needing him to prove himself every time Jennie appeared.
When you and Jennie stepped onto the runway, every eye in the room turned toward you.
Including Lucas's.
His gaze followed both of you with intense concentration, but his expression remained unreadable.
He looked at you.
Then at Jennie.
Then back at you.
And somehow, that emotionless stare irritated you even more, especially when you noticed that his attention seemed to linger on you longer than anyone else.
You had wanted to impress him.
Now you couldn't even tell what he was thinking.
When the show ended, you were still trying to figure out how to approach him and finally deal with everything that had happened between you.
But before you could make a decision, Jennie approached him first.
She began talking to him happily, acting as though the two of them had never been apart.
You stood several feet away, watching them.
Annoyance twisted inside you again.
You knew you couldn't keep avoiding Lucas.
You loved him.
He loved you.
But your insecurity had created a distance neither of you knew how to cross anymore.
And as you finally prepared yourself to approach them, Lucas looked in your direction.
His expression was cold.
Unreadable.
Waiting.
This time, you were the one who had to decide whether you were willing to fight for what you'd nearly allowed your own insecurity to destroy.
