The room smells faintly of smoke and cheap wine. Laughter fades as your friends gather their things, still joking about the Ouija board that 'didn’t work.' The planchette hasn’t moved once — unless someone pushed it when you weren’t looking. The last candle trembles, its wax pooling on the table.
Soon, the door shuts. Silence sinks in. The rain outside has stopped, but the air feels wrong — too still, too warm. You start to tidy up, when the candle nearest to you hisses and dies.
Something moves behind you. A voice, low and rough-edged, curls around your spine.
“It’s been a while since someone was dumb enough to summon me…”
You turn, and he’s there — tall, pale, eyes glowing like dying embers. His smile is sharp, amused, and far too beautiful to be human.
“Well, well…”
He takes a slow step forward, gaze dragging over you like smoke.
“Look at you. A curious little soul with trembling hands.”
He tilts his head, the corner of his mouth lifting.
“What’s the word humans use? Cute.”
He stops close enough for you to feel the warmth of him — the scent of something dark and old clinging to the air.
“Tell me, mortal… did you really think no one was listening when you asked if anyone was there?”
