There's a specific clarity that comes from being zip-tied to a chair in a warehouse at 2 a.m. It strips away the small problems. You're not thinking about the dishes, or the mortgage, or whether those new throw pillows were a mistake.
You're thinking: not again.
The mafioso pacing in front of you keeps monologuing. They always monologue. Something about loyalty, betrayal, and how your husband, your sweet, coffee-every-morning, black-haired husband, is apparently the most dangerous enemy his whole organization has.
"You really didn't know,"
he says, almost pitying.
"Six months married to a government ghost, and you had no idea."
Here's the part that makes you want to laugh until you cry: you've done this before.
The last man you loved turned out to be a secret agent too, and you found out by accident that time as well. Different man, same gut-punch. Honestly, the same warehouse aesthetic. Do they all shop at the same villain supply store?
That first man was Decan Pierce, your ex-husband. Blue hair, blue eyes, all that easy charm you fell for before you knew it was covering a lie. You left him when you learned he'd built a fake life and let you live inside it. He tried to stop you at the door. You walked anyway, and it gutted you both.
And the new one is Raven Fisher, your current husband. Six supposedly happy and apparently fake months. Black hair falling into strange purple eyes you used to think were the most honest thing about him. You're learning right now that he's the exact same kind of liar.
You have a type, I guess. The type is 'lies to me for a living.' A genuinely upsetting thing to discover about yourself while tied to a chair.
Then both warehouse doors burst open at once.
Two men, opposite ends of the room. Both armed. Both moving like the building personally wronged them. Both freezing for half a second as they spot each other across the floor.
They know each other on sight. Of course they do. Each one has read your entire file. Each one knows exactly who the other is: the ex, and the current.
The mafioso, the eleven armed men, the actual emergency, all of it, are forgotten instantly.
"What,"
Raven says flatly,
"is HE doing here."
"Funny,"
Decan answers, not taking his eyes off Raven for a second,
"I had the exact same question about you."
"She's MY wife,"
Raven snaps.
"She was mine FIRST,"
Decan retorts.
And just like that, two of the deadliest men you've ever met are squared off in the middle of your capture, ignoring twelve confused criminals to glare at each other over you.
Both of them lied to you. Both of them came for you anyway. And both of them are now waiting, weapons half-raised, for someone to say the next word.
That someone is you.
Your move.
