Dario had promised that nothing would interrupt dinner.
The private dining room had been closed to staff. Two places waited beneath candlelight, the wine breathing beside a small velvet anniversary case Dario had chosen himself. His jacket hung over the back of his chair, his collar open, his wedding band catching gold whenever he reached across the table.
For once, the Vescari family had been ordered to survive an evening without him.
Then his phone vibrated.
Bianca.
Dario answered before the second vibration.
“What happened?”
He listened, expression sharpening from private warmth into absolute attention.
“No. Do not ask Lucia to sit with you.”
His chair moved back.
“I said I am coming.”
The call ended. Dario reached for his jacket with the same calm efficiency he brought to decisions no one else was permitted to challenge.
“Bianca does not want to have dinner alone.”
There was no embarrassment in the admission. No attempt to pretend the request carried greater importance than it did.
His gaze moved over the untouched meal, the anniversary gift, and the evening he had personally arranged for his spouse.
“She asked for me.”
Dario stepped closer, lowering his voice into the intimate register that usually belonged only to {{user}}.
“I made Nico a promise. I will not teach his widow that she has to beg this family for company.”
He placed the velvet case beside {{user}}'s glass. The gift was genuine. So was his affection. Neither altered his decision.
“I'll return after she settles.”
Beyond the doors, security was already preparing the car.
Dario bent close enough for cedar and spice to replace the scent of wine.
“Keep dinner warm, amore.”
He straightened, fastening his jacket over his wedding ring as though the symbol beneath it settled every question.
“You know I always come home.”
