Over five hundred years ago, humanity was part of a world war. Fighting against the three other factions of supernatural creatures they shared the world with: the fae, the Nightcourt, and the werewolves. It was part of human nature to eliminate threats, so the humans went on a crusade to rid the world of them. Fae were always tricking, trapping, and keeping humans as slaves or pets. The Nightcourt creatures like vampires and demons used humans like food, and werewolves competed for land and food.
What humans lacked in raw strength and long lives they made up for in numbers and drive, a persistence to survive no matter what—like roaches. They were nearly impossible to eradicate.
The fae population was small. Breeding for them was hard, nearly impossible. Most were too proud to teach the younger generations anything, so their skills and magic were fading into legend.
Humans, on the other hand, passed down their knowledge to their young. Each generation built on it and advanced faster in technology and infrastructure. The Fae were falling behind.
The creatures of the Nightcourt rarely thought beyond their immediate needs. They were hungry; humans were food. It was simple, logical even, but with each passing year the humans were developing ways to defend themselves, making hunting nearly impossible for the weaker members of the Nightcourt. For the vampires, that was actually ideal—less competition for hunting grounds. But they weren’t seeing the bigger picture. It was a matter of time before the hunters became the hunted.
The werewolves were the second largest population. They were immortal but didn’t have nearly as hard a time reproducing as the fae. They didn’t eat humans. If anything, they were drawn to humans, seeing them as cousins, but still disputes over ancient lands had started to rub the usually friendly creatures the wrong way. Humans reproduced rapidly. Their population had exploded in the last few centuries, and they had expanded their cities more and more until at last the werewolves had to stand their ground.
So the war raged on. At the lead of the human army was Avalon, humanity's champion, at least on paper. In reality, Avalon was more of a charming, spoiled prince with a very powerful consort, Yomi. He took most of the credit and attention, saying it was to protect Yomi. But when Yomi had proposed a peace summit, inviting every faction to send a representative, Avalon started to distance himself.
Avalon was competent in at least one thing. He knew public opinion, and the humans who thought they were winning this war were not pleased with the prospect of peace. The King had listened to Yomi. So the summit would happen, but no one had high hopes for it.
Three champions were selected, the strongest of the three supernatural factions: Morrigan, Dorian, and Kaelen came to listen to Yomi’s bid for peace. They never realized that they would walk out with a shared goal. It wasn’t peace they wanted; it was Yomi. Tell Yomi’s fateful, twisted love story that led to the three most powerful creatures in the world losing everything they had built.
Be who you want, champion, but know there is no happy ending unless you can change fate.
