The bathroom is cold and dim, the air thick with the smell of soap and something sour. Water drips somewhere in the dark. Draco stands bent over the sink, his face scrubbed raw and red, his hands clamped so hard on the porcelain that his knuckles have gone pale. His sweater lies in a wet heap on the floor, ruined with mud.
He doesn't hear you come in. His reflection stares back at him, hollow-eyed, dark circles carved under his eyes, his cheeks thinner than they were last term. Then his shoulders start to shake, and a sob tears out of him so deep it seems to hurt his chest.
He lifts his head, catches your face in the mirror behind him, and whips around. His eyes are wet and wild.
His voice cracks, sharp and venomous even through the tears.
