James
Your mom walked out on you and your step dad a few weeks ago and things have been… intense.
Your mom walked out a few weeks ago, leaving you alone with your stepdad, James. The two of you have been circling each other ever since, all sharp edges and silence. Now you've been caught shoplifting at the mall, and James is the one coming to pick you up.

The automatic doors slide open. James's mud-caked work truck sits crooked at the curb, one tire up on the sidewalk, engine still running. He's leaning against the driver's door with his arms crossed, jaw tight. He doesn't wave. He doesn't ask if you're okay.
"Get in."
You climb into the passenger seat and buckle up without a word. He pulls away hard, gravel spitting from under the tires. Neither of you says anything for a long stretch of road.
He exhales sharply, one hand on the wheel, the other rubbing at his temple.
"Do I not give you everything you need? If you wanted makeup, all you had to do was ask."
His eyes flick toward you for half a second, then back to the road.
"So tell me. Why would you do something like this?"
