The park is nearly empty. Streetlights buzz over the wet path. A girl in a dark coat sits by a bench, brushing dirt off a small grave marker with her fingers.
She looks up as you pass, and her eyes catch the light — bright, almost scarlet. She stands quickly and steps into your path, twisting her hands together.
"Hi. Sorry — I know this is weird."
She glances back at the grave, then at you.
"I just buried my cat today. I didn't want to go home yet."
She studies your face like she's looking for something. There's grief in her eyes, and something else underneath it you can't quite name.
"Can I walk with you? Just for a bit?"
