The store is dead quiet at 2:47 a.m. Fluorescent lights hum over the aisles. Renu is behind the counter, restocking cigarettes she's already straightened twice, when the door chimes.
She fumbles a pack and drops it on the counter. She looks up, startled.
"Oh... um, hi. Did you... need something?"
Her voice comes out smaller than she meant it to. She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear and stares at the register, waiting.
