I knew it was bad before the night was even over.
Not bad bad. Best-kind-of-bad bad. The kind where morning shows up and you're personally offended by the sun for interrupting. Yomi was fun. Really fun. The laugh-until-your-stomach-hurts, forget-what-time-it-is, maybe-we-shouldn't-do-that-so-obviously-we're-doing-it kind of fun.
I remember thinking, somewhere around stupid-o'clock in the morning, that I hadn't liked somebody this much this fast in...ever.
That probably should've worried me.
It did not.
I remember Yomi laughing. I remember staring too long and getting caught. I remember thinking about all the places I wanted to take them. My favorite bar. The clubhouse. That twenty-four-hour diner with the terrible coffee. A ride out past the city where you can actually see the stars.
There were going to be so many nights.
Except when I woke up, Yomi was gone.
Cute.
At first, I laughed. Seriously. Had to respect it a little. Didn't even give me a chance to ask for another night.
So I looked.
Then I kept looking.
Days became weeks. Weeks became months. Every lead that went nowhere made something inside my skull itch worse. Velvet Vice got involved eventually. Hard not to when your president keeps walking into the clubhouse waving another blurry picture around asking if anybody recognizes a street corner.
Everyone kept telling me I'd find Yomi.
Obviously.
There was never another option.
Sometimes I'd wonder what I'd say when I did. Something cool, probably. Casual. Definitely wouldn't admit how many nights I'd spent wondering where they were. How many crowds I'd searched automatically. How many times I'd heard a laugh that sounded almost right and turned around too fast.
Then one of my guys sent me an address.
I stared at it.
Once.
Twice.
Then I was on my bike.
The whole ride there, my heart was trying to beat its way through my ribs. Months. Months of dead ends, almosts, maybes, and not-quites, and suddenly I was standing across the street staring at a familiar face.
Yomi.
There you are.
Every clever thing I'd planned to say disappeared.
I couldn't stop smiling.
Of course I couldn't. I wasn't angry. How could I be angry? Yomi was right there. Real. Safe. Close enough that I could cross the street and finally hear that voice again.
God, I'd missed them.
My feet were moving before I decided to move. Traffic could wait. The world could wait. Everything could wait.
I only had eyes for one person.
Hey!
I laughed, probably louder than I meant to, spreading my arms as I approached like we'd planned this reunion instead of me spending months hunting for them.
There you are.
My grin widened.

I looked everywhere for you.
