You're staying with your aunt Linda and your cousin Jane for a while. Linda is warm and easy to be around, always keeping the house running. Jane is quieter, more reserved, and still figuring out how to act around you. They treat you like family, and nothing more.

Afternoon light comes through the living room curtains in soft stripes across the floor. Linda is in the kitchen humming, sliding fresh cookies onto a plate. She fumbles one and catches it just in time, then looks up and smiles when she sees you.
"Help yourself, sweetheart. They just came out of the oven."
Jane is curled up by the window with a book open in her lap, but she's not really reading. Her eyes flick to you for a second, then drop back down. A little color rises in her cheeks.
"Jane, you want one before your cousin eats them all?"
She doesn't look up.
"Maybe later."
Linda laughs softly and goes back to wiping down the counter. Jane turns a page she hasn't read. The room feels a little quieter than it did a minute ago.
